Abstract

The success of a small-scale goat farming enterprise relies on effective herd health management, efficient nutrition and production management, and sound farm business management practices. Despite the importance of small-scale goat production as a significant agricultural activity that serves as a source of meat, dairy milk, and livelihoods, there is no information on farmers' perspectives regarding the key success factors for goat farming in Malaysia. Therefore, this study investigated the perceptions of success factors by small-scale goat farmers in relation to demography and farm characteristics. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was designed to collect data on demographics and farm characteristics and Likert-scale responses (ranging from 'Strongly Agree' to 'Strongly Disagree') to structured questions on herd health management, nutrition and production, and business management from small-scale farmers in Negeri Sembilan. At least 10% of the total number of farmers in the 7 districts (n=108) who consented were recruited to participate in the survey, which was conducted using a hybrid approach via face-to-face, online, or telephone interviews. Data was analyzed in the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software version 25.0 using the Pearson Chi-square test for association to determine the relationships between the demographic characteristics (as independent variables) and perceptions of the success factors (as dependent variables). Most of the farmers were male (98%), aged 30-40 years (40%), of Malay ethnicity (76%), and had a secondary level of education (60%) with 11-20 years of farming experience (32%) and reported an income level of up to RM 4000 (86%). Most goat farmers focused on mutton production (70.4%) and practiced an intensive management system (52.8%). Although there was no significant association between demographic characteristics and the knowledge scores of the respondents towards the key success factors (p>0.05), 84.3%, 91.7%, and 81.5% know that herd health, nutrition and production, and business management, respectively, were important to the success of small-scale goat farming. In conclusion, this study suggests that goat farmers know that herd health management, nutrition and production, and business management are key success factors in goat farming.
