Abstract
Lymphoma is one of the most common neoplasms of cats, with a subset of these cases being associated with Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) infection. In Malaysia, 12 out of every 100 cats are serologically positive for FeLV. The main goals of this study were to determine the prevalence of FeLV-associated lymphomas in cats in Malaysia, and to correlate FeLV infection with the development of specific lymphoma subtypes. Forty-five cases of feline round cell tumours from the archives of the Histopathology Laboratory, Veterinary Laboratory Service Unit (VLSU), University of Putra Malaysia (UPM) from 2013 to 2023, were reexamined. Patients’ signalment, anatomic distribution, histological features, and immunoreactivity of the lymphomas for CD20 (B-cell marker), CD3 (T-cell marker), and FeLV gp85/gp70 antigen were assessed. The association of anatomical distributions, and lymphoma subtypes with FeLV infection was explored using Fisher’s exact test. Lymphoma was diagnosed in 13 cats (28.89%). Extranodal lymphomas (46.15%, 6/13) were the most frequent anatomic form presented, followed by mediastinal (23.08%, 3/13), multicentric (15.39%, 2/13), and alimentary forms (15.39%, 2/13). Majority of the cases were classified as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) (76.92%, 10/13), followed by lymphoblastic T-cell lymphoma (T-LBL) (23.08%, 3/13). Immunopositivity for FeLV was observed in 23.08% (3/13) of the samples; all three were mediastinal T-LBL (P = 0.003). In conclusion, our study revealed that a significant proportion of feline lymphomas in Malaysia is associated with FeLV infections, illustrating the need to consider FeLV vaccination as a core vaccine, especially in young cats, in our country.
