Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of co-digestion of rice straw washed water (RSWW) and domestic waste water (DWW) using Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor (UASB). This experiment was employed using UASB and controlled under mesophilic condition at temperature of 38°C. The performance of the reactor is analyzed by measurement of parameters such as pH, organic loading rate, alkalinity, COD removal, and Total Ammonia Nitrogen. The microbes used in this study were obtained from the water treatment plant from Faculty of Engineering, University Putra Malaysia. In this study, during the phase of rice straw washed water, the reactor was unstable which indicated by the decreased of biogas production, low pH value and as well as low COD removal efficiency with value in range of 74.5%. The instability is because of high lignin content in RSWW which cause resistance to anaerobic digestion and inhibit the efficiency of COD removal. However, the co digestion of RSWW and DWW enhances the performance of the reactor with highest methane production 0.084 UCH4 at day 31. The nutrient available in the domestic waste water could promote the synergistic effect in co digestion of rice straw washed water and domestic waste water because of the domestic waste water has a high biodegradability compared to the rice straw. This study implies co digestion rice straw washed water and domestic waste water perform better than mono digestion of rice straw washed water with the highest COD removal 89.88% because the co digestion can provide not only the necessary microorganism but also appropriate balance of nutrient. The highest addition of 3 % sodium chloride caused inhibition in the anaerobic digestion system.
