Abstract
Introduction: Zika disease was one of the vector-borne diseases that can cause neurological disorder among infants. AL&S aegypti was the mosquito that transmit Zika virus. There were 8200 people in worldwide had facing Zika disease until 2014. In 2016, the increase cases of Zika disease become public attention in worldwide including Malaysia. The Zika disease in Brazil was spread continuously to other 33 countries until the end of 2016. In Malaysia, Ministry of Health (MOH) had issued a directive towards prevention of Zika disease in 2016 because there were 8 cases of Zika disease had been recorded until December 2016. Therefore, by assessing the knowledge, attitude and practice, it was an essential action for epidemic and pandemic response. Objective: To study the knowledge, attitude and practice on Zika disease among students of Environmental and Occupational Health (ENVOCH) at public university in Malaysia. Methodology: Cross sectional survey and self-administered questionnaire were used in this study. The respondents was from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) which involved only first year and fourth year students of ENVOCH (N=172). The universal sampling had been used when to select the university that offered the course of ENVOCH. Meanwhile, purposive sampling was used in choosing the level of year of the students. Descriptive analysis, Correlation analysis, T-test and Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine the level of knowledge, attitude and practice. Results and Discussion: Based on descriptive analysis. the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of the students were in moderate level. However, there was significant difference (p=0.005) between age and practice towards prevention of Zika disease. The difference of age can make people practice and act differently. After undergo Speaman's rho correlation. there was weak significant positive correlation between knowledge and attitude (r=0.205, p=0.007) and between practice with attitude (r=0.549, p=0.001). There was no significant of knowledge, attitude and practice between first and fourth year students of ENVOCH. This could be due to the information of the Zika disease reach at Malaysia was still new. Conclusion: By determining the level of knowledge, attitude and practice among university students, it can prevent the transmission of Zika disease and provide baseline data for Ministry of Health (MOH) for their further action. Keywords: Knowledge, attitude, practice, Zika disease, Malaysia
