Abstract

Veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) is the effort of both the clients and equine veterinarians to communicate and work together as a team and it plays an important role in allowing an equine veterinarian to provide the best possible treatment to the horses. This study aims (i) to describe the common problems faced by equine veterinarians and (ii) methods used by equine veterinarians when handling the problems that arise when dealing with horse clients. An online questionnaire (Google Form) was developed and distributed to active practising equine veterinarians in Malaysia. The questionnaire consists of three sections with section A being demographic data, section B being common problems faced by the veterinarians and section C being common methods used to solve the problems. A total of 28 responses were received from the veterinarians. Based on the survey, the respondents agree that financial constraints (28.6%) is one of the common problems affecting the relationship between equine veterinarians and their clients. The response also shows that miscommunication (60.7%) was voted as the problem least affecting their ability to deal with their clients. The common methods used to handle the problems that arise when dealing with clients are using clear and easy to understand language when communicating (64.3%), using various methods for communication (64.3%), advocating for clients to practise proper preventive care (53.6%), determine the cause of problem by stable visits when discrepancies arise (46.4%) and keeping detailed records of history taken and treatment provided to horses (64.3%).To conclude, the results of this study shows that financial constraints affects the ability of the equine veterinarians to provide the best treatment for their patients and equine veterinarians also practise multiple methods to overcome the limitations faced to provide the best service for their patient, the horses.
