Abstract

Introduction: Safety helmet is one of the personal protective equipment (PPE) that has the function to reduce the impact of any falling object to the skull and also to prevent head and brain injury by many industries including palm oil plantation. Nevertheless, the level on the usage of the current safety helmet is very low due to a few factors that lead to the discomfort. Among the emphasized issues for the noncompliance of safety helmet are the discomfort, ventilation, weight and safety. Objective: Thus the aim of this study was to bring new designs of safety helmets device to the palm oil plantation harvesters in order to know their subjective preference towards safety helmets. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 124 harvesters in three palm oil plantations located in Sabah, Malaysia. A set of questionnaires was used to collect data on socio-demographic background, perception towards existing safety helmet and subjective preference of new prototype safety helmets. Apart from that, six harvesters were randomIy selected to attend an interview session for qualitative assessment. Results and Discussion: Based on the descriptive analysis, results indicate that among the emphasized issues regarding non-compliance of existing safety helmet were due to discomfort (66.1 %), poor ventilation (97.6%), load of safety helmet (83.3%) and safety issues (68.5%). In term of new prototypes safety helmets design, 72.6% of the harvesters preferred Design C to be worn for work in the plantation. Conclusion: The existing safety helmet found to be uncomfortable for the palm oil harvester and was not ergonomically design. Among the four new prototypes of safety helmets, Design C was the most preferred to be worn for work in the palm oil plantation. Keywords: subjective preference, palm oil plantation harvester, new prototypes safety helmets
