Abstract
A study to examine the morphology and identification of local flatfish species from several landing sites in Bintulu was conducted for 32 weeks from 18th August 2006 to 2nd March 2007. This study examined the morphology and identity of 24 specimens of local flatfishes landed at three sites in Bintulu; Bintulu market, Kampung Baru and Tanjung Kidurong. Samples of flatfish collected were determined for seven morphometric, seven meristic characters, body shape, eye position, mouth location, size and the shape of the tail. The type and dimension of scales also identified from various parts of the flatfish. Four species of flatfishes were identified consisting of right eyed Psettodes erumei and left eyed Psettodes erumei from Family Psettodidae, Pseudorhombus malayanus belong to Family Bothidae and Cynoglossus borneensis from the Family Cynoglossidae. Female flatfish differed from male flatfish with respect to reproductive organ, size and weight. The right eyed Psettodes erumei and the left eyed Psettodes erumei also differed in placement of the liver, intestine and the stomach. Both sides of the body of flatfish have scales. Psettodes erumei and C. borneensis have ctenoid scales on the eyed side and the cycloid scales on the blind side. For P. malayanus, the ctenoid scales were observed on both sides of body.
