Abstract
The study on propagation of Eugenia spicata Lamk and Mesuaferrea L. by cuttings was conducted at the Horticulture unit ofUniversiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus. Cuttings were obtained from established trees around Bintulu, Sarawak. Propagation by air layering was done in situ at the University's Botanical Garden. Half of the hardwood, semi hardwood and softwood cuttings were treated with rooting hormone. There were two treatments consisting of the treatments with rooting hormone and untreated control, each in three replicates. The propagation by air layering was done in situ, on plants existing natural environment. The layering treatments consisted of different growth media, Jiffy tablets and a soil mixture wrapped with sphagnum moss. Each type of growth media consisted of three replicates and all samples were treated with auxin. Semi hardwood (84.45%) and hardwood cutting (82.22%) of Eugenia spicata showed a higher percentage of survivals as compared to softwood cutting (44.45%). There was no significant difference in the survival of hardwood or semi hardwood cuttings but there was a significant difference between hardwood or semi hardwood and softwood cuttings of Eugenia spicata. Mesua ferrea showed higher percentage of survival with semi hardwood (86.67%) and softwood cutting (80.00%) as compared to hardwood cuttings (42.22%). There was no significant difference between semi hardwood and softwood cutting of Mesua ferrea. There was significant difference for auxin application on the different types of cuttings in both plant species. There was a significantly higher rate of success with air layering in Eugenia spicata treated with the auxin. The success rate for Mesua ferrea was lowered as compared to Eugenia spicata. There was no significant difference between the growth media used for air layering. The best methods for propagation of Eugenia spicata are with the used of hardwood and semi hardwood cuttings and air layering method, while with Mesua ferrea using semi hardwood and softwood cuttings would give better results.
