Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the insecticidal properties of Annona muricata seeds extracts using several chromatographic methods and spectroscopic techniques such as 1 H NMR, 13C NMR, GC-MS and infrared spectroscopy. The extracts of Annona muricata were strongly toxic to the Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae (chloroform crude extracts LCso value 0.9005 µg/ml and LC90 value 6.1776 µg/ml) and brine shrimp (Artemia salina) (methanol crude extracts LC50 value 11.8823 µg/ml). However, the crude extracts stated did not show anti-microbial activity against Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio parahaemolylicus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Fraction 44b and 45b of the chloroform extracts showed strong toxicity towards the mosquito larvae with a LC50 value of 0.7460 µg/ml and 1.0402 µg/ml respectively. Identification of the bioactive compound was done and one acetogenin compound, solamin was identified.
