Abstract
Project paper (B.S.(Environmental & Occupational Health)) – Universiti Putra Malaysia, 2014. Introduction: Landfilling is widely used in Malaysia. These sites can emit many pollutants such as dust through dispersion of contaminated air or soil and leachate from the contaminated sites due to poor waste management. Human who resides in areas within the proximity of a kilometer are easily affected by toxic elements that are retained in landfills. This study was conducted to determine sign and symptoms of respiratory problem due to exposure to particulate matter (PM10) among children living near landfill, Methodology: A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted to study current situation and compare among study group and comparative group. First, SK Panchang Bedena that located near to Panchang Bedena landfill, Sungai Besar, Selangor with their respected selected students were selected to participate in this study. The information respiratory symptoms were acquired through parent-administered questionnaires that were adapted from American Thoracic Society (1978). Air monitoring also was conducted to assess PM10 exposure. Result: The result showed that PM10 (0R=16.035, CI= 2.385-107.857) and sedentary lifestyle (0R=9.260, CI= 1.564-54.810) contributes to increase the odd of reporting cough symptom. Thus, living near landfill is significantly associated with respiratory symptoms among studied children. Conclusion: To conclude, it showed that there was significant source of PM10 from studied landfill. However, it does not significantly contribute to other respiratory symptoms generally. Thus, future studies should explore more on children's health in landfill. Also, land developer should plan a better arrangement in mapping residential areas for better life and air quality. Keywords: sign and symptoms, respiratory inflammation, children, MSW landfill, PM10
