Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate vaginal mucus ferning as a method for detecting estrus in goats. Five non-pregnant, non-lactating does of Boer breed were used in this study, which conducted during the month of December, January and February. Vaginal mucus ferning were obtained by using cotton swab technique and were monitored for 65 days. Other parameter for the signs of estrus also been monitored, which are color of vagina, texture of the vagina, vaginal mucus viscosity, temperature of the vagina and presence of blood at vagina. After this study was done, vaginal mucus feming technique does not appear to be effective for detecting estrus in does compare to other sign of estrus observation. Although this mucus characteristics study may have some value in reflecting the status of reproductive activities in does, they do not guarantee precision for determining the time of estrus and ovulation.
