Abstract

A survey was conducted to assess the incidence of tapeworms in commercial broilers in selected fanns (Chicwan Farm, Haji Othman Farm, Asmahusna Fann, Dr. Lau Fann, UPM Integrated Fann 1 and UPM Integrated Farm 2) around Bintulu, Sarawak. The presence of ova was examined from fresh fecal samples weekly from week 1 to week 6 while the adult tapeworms were examined in the intestine after 6 weeks. Out of 6 farms, not a single ova or tapeworms were observed. Weight of 20 broilers each farm was measured weekly from week 1 to week 6 for emaciation and weight loss observation. In the end of studies, all farms managed to come out with constant growth rate, with Chicwan Farm came out with the highest mean value of 2751.29 gram while UPM Integrated Farm 1 came up with lowest mean value of 1176.35 gram. The result showed that no tapeworms, ova, or tapeworm segments exist in either weekly collected fecal samples or intestinal tract samples, which collected at the end of week 6.
