Abstract

Heavy metals were determined in Cucumis melo L. when using different levels of palm oil mill effluent (POME) as organic fertilizer was done. Plants received 0, 20, 30, and 50 % POME as organic fertilizer treatments. The roots, stems and leaves of Cucumis melo were dry-ashed and heavy metals determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (model AAnalyst 800). One-way ANOV A was used to analyze the differences between plant tissues. The results showed lead, cadmium, zinc and copper were determined. Zinc and lead had exceeded their essential level and this is very high concentration meanwhile copper and cadmium not exceeded their essential level. The high concentrations of zinc was effected by POME because zinc was determined in POME, and higher concentration of lead was not effected by POME as lead was not determined in POME. For cadmium, POME influenced the increase in the concentration of this metal, and concentrations of copper were not effected by POME. The highest concentration of these metals was observed in root tissues of Cucumis melo L. receiving the 50% POME treatment.
