Abstract

Nitrates, a colourless, odourless, and tasteless compound that is present in some groundwater and which become essential sources of water for human consumption have been related to various cases of disease. By investigating the level of nitrate in groundwater in Kg. Bukit Bator, it would help us to estimate the Hazard Index (HI) from the exposure. The nitrate level of nitrate also can be monitored from time to time to estimate if there is any pollution so that any action can be taken. Two parameter was measured, level of nitrates in groundwater and the distance of groundwater from septic tank by using using a H198190 Portable PH/ORP ASE Meter and GPS respectively. A set of questionnaire was given to each of the 45 respondents in Kg. Bukit Bator. Analysis were carried out by using IBM SPSS software to run Spearman's Rho correlation test. No correlation between level of nitrates in groundwater and distance of septic tank from the groundwater were found out. This may be due to the fact that most of the source of nitrates in groundwater of the respondent's houses doesn't resulted from the septic tank. The main sources of nitrates in groundwater may came from agriculture within the housing compound as most of the nitrates in groundwater came from the fertilizers. Previous studies also showed that few villages in Bachok district had almost similar results with this study. However, distance of septic tank from source of groundwater should follow the standard set-up by the local authority in the future. Keywords: nitrate pollution, groundwater, septic tank, Hazard Index (HI)
