Abstract
Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are one of the most prevalent occupational diseases that underpinned by two factors which are ergonomics risk factors and psychosocial risk factors. Traffic police is an occupation handling various tasks that expose them equivalently to both risk factors that posed them to Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) development due to their nature of work. They are vulnerable to stress and become mentally and physically exhausted while regulating heavy traffic. However, there are limited studies been carried out to address the MSDs issue among Malaysian traffic police. Objectives: The main objective of this study is to determine the association between psychosocial factors which is stress and Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) among Malaysian traffic police in the Northern region. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 96 male traffic police officers. The traffic police below 18 years old or pre-diagnosed with MSDs were excluded. A set of questionnaires including Standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) and Police Stress Questionnaire (PSQ) were used. RULA and REBA assessments were conducted for awkward posture identification. Chi-square test and Fisher Exact were used for correlation testing. Results and Discussion: The prevalence of MSDs was 66.7% and the prevalence of stress was 94.8%. The most reported body parts with MSDs were shoulders, neck, and hips. Age, number of family members and average sleeping hours were found associated with MSDs. There was no significant association between psychosocial factors and MSDs. Conclusion: The prevalence of MSDs and the prevalence of stress were high. However, there was no association found between psychosocial factors and MSDs. More research is needed to address the psychosocial risk and MSDs among traffic police in Malaysia and investigate the relationship. Keywords: Psychosocial factors, stress, Musculoskeletal Disorders, traffic police, Northern region
