Abstract
Introduction: Prolonged exposure to excessive noise in edible oil refineries, frequently exceed recommended thresholds, poses a danger for both auditory and non- auditory impacts. It is also a substantial stressor. The purpose of this research is to improve the understanding of non-auditory impacts of noise on workers in edible oil refineries and to determine those factors that can contribute to occupational stress. Objective: Finding the relationship between personal noise exposure and occupational stress in Pasir Gudang, Johor, is the main goal of the study. Assessing sociodemographic and occupational information, individual noise exposure levels, the frequency of occupational stress, and factors linked to occupational stress are some of the specific goals. Methodology: A cross-sectional study conducted in July 2023, involving 67 from 13 sections was selected through the purposive sampling method according to inclusion and exclusion crieteria. The validated and reliable translated version of the the O'Donnell Personal Stress Inventory assessed psychological factors of stress. Personal noise exposure was measured using the 3MTM Edge 4 Personal Noise Dosimeter. Result: The results show a significant association between workers' personal noise exposure and occupational stress (p=0.007). The prevalence of occupational stress among workers in edible oil refineries is 44.8%. The workers' occupational stress and sociodemographic factors do not significantly associated. The number of working overtime per week was found to be associated with occupational stress (OR=0.802, 95% CI 0.038, 0.802, p=0.025). Conclusion: Personal noise exposure is one of the factor contributed to stress among refinery workers, emphasizing the need for mitigation strategies. However, there was also another factor associated with occupational stress which is number of working overtime per week, which highlighting areas for targeted interventions to alleviate occupational stress in this population.
