Abstract

Objective: To determine the perception of colour for upper working garment from the perspective of occupational safety and health among oil palm plantation workers and their preferences. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 111 respondents who were being selected randomly among oil palm harvesters at Sandakan, Sabah. A set of questionnaire was used to obtain socio-demographic information, occupational information, respondents' perception on workplace safety as well as workplace thermal comfort and lastly their preference of garment's colour. Garments of ten colour choices were displayed as reference as the respondents complete the questionnaire. Results: Properties such as visibility and ease of cleaning were significantly associated with the least preferred colour whereas safety, visibility, thermal comfort and cleanliness were significantly associated with the most preferred colour. The drying rate of garments' colour was not significantly associated with the colour preference. Oil palm harvesters tend to choose cool colour such as blue and avoid choosing warm colours such as red and yellow as their garments' colour. Conclusion: The choices of garments' colour among oil palm harvesters appeared to be based on a mixed result of various properties such as safety, visibility from a far distance, thermal comfort and cleanliness maintenance. Keywords: garments' colour, occupational safety and health, oil palm harvesters
