Abstract
Introduction: In agricultural, palm oil specifically has become the main sub-sector and create a lot of job opportunities among local and foreign workers. However, number of injuries reported in agricultural sector is the second highest after manufacturing. In palm oil plantation, basic knowledge on safety helmet were known among workers however intervention is needed to improve the practice of it. Objective: This study aims to determine the difference on knowledge and practice of safety helmet usage among palm oil harvesters before and after implementation of training. Method: A pretest-posttest study design is used to determine harvesters' knowledge and practice on safety helmet usage and injuries information were also collected. A total of 113 harvesters from three plantations in Sandakan are included in this study. Questionnaires were used to collect data on socio demographic background, occupational information, injuries information and knowledge, attitude and practice for pretest-posttest. A training session through tool box talk and video presentation on correct usage of safety helmet was given. Observation on field was carried out on practice item for post-test. Result: Data collected on injuries shows that 80.5% of harvesters has experienced injuries and among them, the body parts that injured the most are hands (42.9%) and legs (48.4%). The main cause of injuries was found out to be due to hit by palm fronds (70.3%). Descriptive analysis shows harvesters have high score for knowledge, attitude and practice before training session. There is a significance difference (p<0.05) on knowledge before and after implementation of training. However, there is no significance difference (p>0.05) on practice item between before and after training as the number of practices decreases during field observation. Conclusion: Overall, this study revealed that over half of the harvesters have high knowledge, attitude and practice level on safety helmet usage. Training session implemented is helpful in increasing harvesters' knowledge but not in practice wise. More data on plantations' related injuries are needed to improve preventive measure to reduce injuries in palm oil plantations. Keywords: safety helmet, knowledge, attitude, practice, injuries
