Abstract

The average age at first lay, weight of bird at first lay and weight or first egg were 95.90 ± 0.70 ·days, 173.07 ± 1.36 grams and 10.69 ± 0.16 grams respectively. During the first few weeks of laying, many broken and soft-shelled eggs were encountered. The incidence was markedly reduced after the change to layer mash at 17th week of age. Peak of egg production was attained on the 12th to the 14th·week of laying with 85.32 ± 2.06% of the eggs laid in the C period (4.00 p.m. to 8.30 a.m.). The size of the egg at different laying stages ranged from 11.04 to 12.35 grams with an overall mean of 11.66 ± 0.19 grams. reed consumption per bird per day during the laying period varied from 19.10 to 25.81 grams with an overall mean of 21.99 -+ o.39 grams and the highest feed intake corresponded with the peak of egg production. Average bird weight during the laying period varied from 147.47 to 174.93 grams with an overall mean of 16136 ± 1.66 grams. With a mating ratio of 1 male to 1 female and from the 24 selected eggs incubated at 1000 F and a relative humidity of 80%, 15 eggs hatched out in 16½ days representing a fertility of 70.83% and hatchability of 66.67%. Apart from the reproductive disorders that caused the high percentage of mortalities in the layer quails, other diseases were not a problem in the flock. The survey on 5 quail farms include 2 farms at Butterworth, 2 farms at lpoh and 1 farm at Malacca.
