Abstract

A total of genital tracts of sows were collected from Shah Alam abattoir and examined macroscopically, microscopically and bacteriologically. The most frequent macroscopic lesion observed was patency (26.5%) in the cervix, endometrial cysts (23.2%) in the uterus and paraovarian cysts (20.4%) in the ovary. Cystic ovaries were observed only in 3.1% of the cases and were associated with cystic endometrium and cystic cervix. Microscopically, the roost frequent lesions observed were chronic cervicitis, chronic endometritis, chronic salpingitis and old hemorrhages in the cervix, uterus, oviduct and ovary respectively. Most of the chronic salpingitis and chronic cervicitis were associated with chronic endometritis. An interesting finding in 10.3% of ovaries were bilateral hemangiomas. The roost frequent bacteria isolated were Escherichia coli followed by Staphylococcus spp. and Acinetobacter spp. while organisms isolated from uteri with endometritis were Corynebacterium pyogenes, Pseudomonas spp. and Escherichia coli in that order of frequency.
