Abstract
This cross sectional study was conducted to determine the calorie adequacy among hospitalized patients receiving nutrition support in medical wards at selected government hospital. Calorie adeqilacy among hospitalized patients is defined when percentage calorie intake ≥75% from calorie requirement A total of 53 hospitalized patients receiving oral or enteral nutrition support were recruited in this study. Sociodemographic status, medical background characteristics and nutrition support related factors were obtained from medical record. Nutritional status included anthropometry data, biochemical data, clinical data, and food history were assessed. Face-to-face interviewed was conducted to collect data. Majority of the patients were maIe (62.3%), elderIy (52.8%), and Malay (58.5%). Only 35.8% of the patient achieved caloric intake (≥75% of energy requirement). Patient receiving enteral nutrition support had higher calorie intake than oral nutrition support patients but not statistically significant (65.39% vs 53.25%). Gender (χ²=3.87, p=0.05) and frequency of feeding (r=0.52,p=0.01) were significantly associated with adequacy in caloric intake. In terms of enteral nutrition support, there was significant difference between feeding interuption and calorie adequacy (t=-3.46, p=0.01). It was found that there were no significant association between age, length of hospital stay, anthropometry data, and biochemical data with percentage of calorie intake. Being female and more frequent feeding were associated with higher calorie adequacy. The more feeding interuption associated with lower calorie adequacy among patients receiving enteral nutrition support. Larger study and longer time duration than this study is warranted.
