Abstract

A five weeks study to survey the aerobic bacteria of the oral cavity was conducted on 25 pet cats and 25 stray cats, which were mostly of Domestic Short Hair Breed, at the Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia {UPM). The cats were obtained within the UPM campus and its vicinity. Gingival swabs were obtained from apparently healthy cats with the exception of 4 cats that were observed to have gingivitis, gum ulcer and necrotic tooth, for aerobic bacterial cultures and identification. The results indicated that the common organisms isolated from both pet and stray cats were Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pasteurella, Klebsiella, Bacillus, Neisseria, Aeromonas, Enterobacter and Shigella. Pasteurella multocida was isolated at the rate of 2-4K in stray oats compared to pet cats 16%. Other Pasteurella organisms isolated in pet cats include Pasteurella sp. (36%) and Pasteurella pneumo- tropica ( 1 2%). The frequency slightly differed in stray cats whereby Pasteurella sp. was 52% and Pasteurella pneumotropica was 4%. Pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida was confirmed by the resulting fatal septicemia to mice inoculated intraperitoneally. The presence of other Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms were discussed for their role in the veterinary aspects of zoonosis and public health importance.
