Abstract

The experiment was carried out under rain sheltered area at the Horticulture Unit, Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus to study the growth performance of Boesenbergia stenophylla grown on different media. There are three treatments represents three different types of medium. Treatment 1 (Tl) consisted of soil mixture of 3:2:1 (top soil: sand: organic matter respectively). Treatment 2 (T2) consisted of soil mixture of 3:2:1 placed in waterlogged tray whereas Treatment 3 (T3) consisted of compost medium made from leaf litters. Each treatment replicates four times with 15 samples each. The experiment was carried out using completely randomized designed (CRD). The parameters taken in this experiment were the survival rates, number of leaves, number of clumps, length of new roots and rhizome. The results showed that there was significant different in survival rate of B. stenophylla grown in different media. There were also significant different in the number of leaves formed ground in different media; Tl (8.951), T2 (7.07') and T3 (8.141). It is significantly different in the number of clumps within those treatment where Tl (3.251) has the highest mean compared to T2 (2.631) and T3 (2.32c). Result from roots analysis shows the significant different between all treatment where T3 (33.241) have the longest new roots followed by Tl (25.681) and T2 (13.76c). T3 (25.06j also have longest rhizome and it is significantly difference with Tl (20. 131) and T2 (20.741). Soil mix of 3:2:1 is most suitable for growing B. stenophylla, followed by compost medium from leaf litters and soil mix of 3:2:1 placed in waterlogged tray.
