Abstract
The term composite beam can be defined as a combination of reinforced concrete slab over a steel beam jointed with a shear connector. It is one of the alternatives and most commonly used method of construction in today building construction. In conventional composite construction, concrete slabs are simply rested over steel beams and supported by them. The composite action is established by connecting the concrete slab and the steel section by using shear connectors. Shear connector allow the transfer of horizontal shear from slab to beam for maximum strength and loading capacity. Furthermore, different types and sizes of shear connector may give significant difference in behaviour of the composite system when exposed to load. In this study, 4 models are develop to study the behaviour of bolted shear connector in composite system with different thickness of precast concrete slab and different diameter of bolted shear connectors. These can be performed using push out test. An effective numerical model using the finite element method to simulate the push-off test was proposed. A three-dimensional finite element model was developed using general purpose finite element analysis through ABAQUS software in order to investigate steel concrete composite system load - slip behaviour, shear capacity of the bolt connectors and its failure modes. The model type used in the ABAQUS software is standard/explicit and concrete damaged plasticity was assigned on the concrete slab model for its material behaviour in order to observe the failure modes occurring on the composite system. A comparison between welded stud connector and bolted shear connector was made in the analysis as well. Finally, the result between models including previous research on welded stud connector is discussed and a satisfactory conclusion is acquired.
