Abstract
Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that result in energy expenditure. Physical activity in daily life can be categorized into occupational, sports, conditioning, household, or other activities. Physical activity is one of the important components of a healthy lifestyle other than a balanced diet. There are broad studies of physical activity among adolescents; however, there were only a few that related to late adolescent phase. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to study the associations between socio-demographic characteristics, physical activity enjoyment, sleep quality, body image perception and body weight status with physical activity level among adolescents in Centre of Foundation Studies for Agricultural Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Validated self-administered questionnaires were used to determine socio-demographic characteristics, physical activity enjoyment, perceived barriers towards physical activity, body image perception and physical activity level. Body weight status was individually measured by the researcher. A total of 178 respondents were recruited which 24.2 % represented male and 7 5. 8 % represented female. The household income was ranged as below RM 5000, RM 5000- RM 8999 and above RM 9 000 with 32.6 %, 27.0 % and 40.4 % respectively .. As a reference to the discrepancy score, 37.2 % was in desires to have bigger body size as compared to 60.0 % of the female. The work domain of physical activity carried dominant value as derivatives which were 1178.9 ± 2706.42, followed by recreational at 1398.0 ± 2292.42. Transport which included cycling and walking computed the least value which was 999.6 ± 1751.00. The total score of perceived barriers towards physical activity was found a negative association with physical activity {r= -0.156; p=0.038), (p<0.05). The mean score of body image perception (r=0.223, p=0.003) was positive associated with physical activity level An appropriate dissemination of physical activity benefits is highly recommended among the students as the level of physical activity practiced by an individual which was inactive <600 MET-min/week.
