Abstract

Introduction: Asthma is the most which common chronic disease among children and this is related to inflammation condition affects morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of asthma among children in Malaysia was 4.2% (Ministry of Health Malaysia, 1997). According to the study by Fadzil & Norzila (2002), most asthmatic patients and their parents have limited understanding on the management of asthma. Therefore, this study is important to nurses because it clarifies some holistic aspects of knowledge, practice and diagnosis especially the educational components when addressing asthmatic patients and their parents. Objectives: To determine factors associated with asthma control, and their association among children 4 to 11 years old in Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL). Methods: A cross-sectional design with universal sampling was used in this study. The data were collected from January until March, 2012 from two hundred and twenty children, 4 to 11 years old who have been diagnosed with asthma. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaires after ethical approvals were obtained from the appropriate authorities. All the data obtained were analysed using the Statistical Analysis Package for Social Sciences whereby a p value :S 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Subsequent to exploratory data analysis, descriptive statistics were used to describe the sample. The Chi-square test was used to determine the associations between categorical variables. Results: 220 respondents had participated in the study. The majority were Malays (182,82.7%), more than half of respondents were 7 to 11 years old (128, 58.2%), paediatric clinic showed the highest of patients (102, 46.4%), and poor knowledge of inhalation technique (129, 58.6%). There were significant associations between the socio-demography of children (location of patient) (pSO.OI), ethnicity (pSO.OI), clinical profile (pSO.05), knowledge of inhalation technique (p:SO.OI) and asthma triggers (p:SO.Ol) with asthma control. Conclusion: The findings of this study would contribute additional information to health care providers in the development asthma education, therefore, improves asthma care management among children with asthma. Furthermore the information obtained from this study could assist further or future research on the best care of asthma in children, thus helping to reduce hospitalisation and treatment cost.
