Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The increasing number of diabetes patients is not new in Malaysia, and diabetics are always badly affected with many complications which include eye problems, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, and leg amputations compared to those non-diabetics. Intensive treatments for diabetes are required in order to delay the onset of its complications, which often requires prolonged treatment. Hence it can be both painful and demanding. Thus the quality of life (QoL), which can be measured of a patient with diabetes often, gets lower due to the impact of its complications. The QoL may also be affected by treatments, and the uncontrolled blood glucose level. There were studies that reported on the poor quality of life (QoL) among patients with diabetes, compared to those who do not have diabetes. However, no study has been done on diabetes-related quality of life among type-2 diabetes patients with ulcers at Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. These studies specifically reported on the physical function and well-being aspects of the patients. Results of this research should be useful in helping to improve the quality of life of patients with diabetes. OBJECTIVES: This study is aimed to measure diabetes-related quality of life score according to The Audit of Dependent Diabetes Quality of Life (ADDQoL) questionnaire and to determine: 1) socio demographic profiles of participants, and 2) the association between Diabetes-related quality of life and socio demographic data. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design and universal sampling method were used in this study. ADDQoL questionnaire with Malay translation (a self¬complete questionnaire) was employed. A total of 165 Type-2 diabetes patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were recruited for this study. Patients were asked to self-complete the questionnaire (by interview for patients who were unable to read) after their written informed consents were obtaIned. Descriptive statistics were generated to describe the sample. Data collected were analysed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS®) version 17 .0. RESULT: A total number of 165 patients, who were between the ages of 25 to 85 agreed to respond to the study. There were 81 (49.7%) and 84 (49.7%) male and female respondents respectively. The ADDQoL showed negative results signifying the adverse effect on the QoL from having diabetic ulcer. Generally respondents' rates their QoL as very bad (13%) and bad (49.7%). However 27.7% claims that their QoL was neither good nor bad and only 7.7% of the respondents claims that their QoL was good. On the other hand, a total of 37.3 % of the respondents answered that their QoL would be very much better without diabetes, and another 60.4% answered that their QoL would be much better without diabetes. CONCLUSION: Diabetic complications especially involving ulcer often require costly and prolong treatment. This may led to poor quality of life, low self-esteem and low mood. This study finds significantly low score of quality of life among type two diabetics with ulcer at Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Keywords: diabetes-related quality of life; type-2 diabetes; diabetic ulcers
