Abstract
A study to evaluate the viability of a commercial sheep rearing under immature rubber plantation was undertaken. The scope of the evaluation included the nutrition, management, production, health status and the economic aspects of the system. The undergrowth in the rubber plantation has a mean dry matter yield of 891.2 kg/ha of which only 45.9 per cent were edible and able to support about 14 to 16 sheep per hectare per year. The deworming programme, castration method, and recording system practised in this farm needed to be improved further. The highest mortality was among the one month ot age group which was 27.2 per cent; general debility accounted for the highest cause of death. This study also revealed that the Dorset Horn crosses has a better reproductive performance than the Wiltshire crosses. However, based on the birth weight and average daily gain, the 50 per cent Wiltshire crosses were superior than the other breeds. The money saved from weeding cost and those obtained from selling of sheep contributed to 6.1 and 41.7 per cent of the total farm revenue, respectively. The major contribution to the total expenditure of the farm were the cost and repair of shed that was 23 per cent. It was concluded that the commercial sheep rearing under immature rubber plantation was feasible technically but not financially.
