Abstract

A farm evaluation was carried out on a commercial pig farm with a total sow standing population of 1287 from 7th November 1988 to 10th December 1988. The farm resources, management processes and production performance for the years 1987 and 1988 were evaluated and analysed. Costing in boar usage, piglet production and porker production were determined. The management of farm resources and processes were generally efficient. However, the main weakness was in the breeding and farrowing performance. The farm had an average return to service of 20.6%; farrowing rate of 70.6% and NIP rate of 8.8%, which were sub-optimal compared to other local farms. A high incidence of delayed return to service was observed. Areas needing further investigation are breeding management, underlying diseases, underusage of boar and heat detection techniques. A higher performance is recommended so as to achieve a higher farm productivity and success.
