Abstract

The efficacy of various anthelmintics in reducing nematodes egg output was evaluated in sheep reared under semi-intensive system. Anthelmintics used were Valbazen* (albendazole), Levacide* (levamisole). Ivomec* (ivermectin) and Systamex* (oxfendazole). Fifteen Poll Dorset, 15 Suffolk, 19 Tibet, 19 Local, 16 sheep from the group Suffolk/CMBLX**/Wiltshire and 16 from the group Poll Dorset/CMBLX were selected at random for faecal egg count on day of treatment, 1st, and 2nd, week after treatment. Data were obtained from previous records and also faecal examinations by the Modified McMaster technique. From laboratory reports, the species of helminths present in this farm are Haemonchus contortus, Strongylgides papi l losus, Monieza expansa, Eurytrerna spp., ------------------------------------------------------------ * Trade name ** Commersial-Merino-Border-Lester-Cross Dictyocaulus spp., Trichostrongylus spp, and Oesophagostomum spp. Beside helminths, faecal determination from group Poll Dorset and CMBLX revealed coccidia oocysts. However, no clinical sign were observed. This study revealed nematode resistance against Valbazen and Levacide, Systamex and lvomec were still effective with 86.9% and 100% efficacy, respectively.
