Abstract

Summary: INTRODUCTION: A lot of studies on adolescent smoking have been done in Malaysia. However, there was limited information available regarding smoking habit among drop out school adolescents. OBJECTIVES: To study the prevalence of smoking among adolescents and factors associated Felda Raja Alias 1 and Felda Serting Hilir 1 in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross sectional study design was used. The sampling method was simple random sampling. The data were collected by distributing the questionnaire from house to house. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. RESULTS: A total of 167 adolescents had answered the questionnaire. The response rate was 72.6%. The smoking prevalence among adolescents was 31.1 %. Smoking is significantly associated (p<0.05) with: 1) gender; 2) status of adolescent; 3) have smoking friend; 4) friend offered cigarette; 5) will smoke when friend offered cigarette; 6) involved in school discipline problem; 7) religiosity; 8) feel smoking is dangerous when see adult smoke; 9) feel that smoking can reduce stress (p<0.05). The mean initiation age of smoking is 13.94 years old. Majority of adolescents will smoke at their friend's house (44.2%), buy cigarette on their own (57.7%) and most of them will buy cigarette at grocery stores (59.6%). CONCLUSION: The authors recommend that anti-smoking campaigns should be instituted on early stage which is among primary school children. A strict punishment also must be taken to owner of grocery stores that sold cigarette to under aged people. School and mass media also should be major source of information as possible regarding dangerous and disadvantages of smoking to adolescents.
