Abstract
Palm oil Biomass such as mesocarp fiber believe to have high amount of vitamin E. Vitamin E which is tocopherols and tocotrienols are essential fat soluble oil suitable for human body as antioxidant and maintain body health . In this experimental work, a study has been performed to evaluate the solid-liquid extraction in the separation of vitamin E using ethanol as solvent. Investigation of the effect of 2 different particle sizes (ground (<5mm) and non ground size (<500mm)) of mesocarp fiber have been perform on vitamin E separation using solid-liquid extraction (soxhlet extraction). The amount of vitamin E contains in non ground size fiber was higher than the ground fiber which is 530 ppm compared with 312 ppm in oil concentration. The higher amount of concentration between 2 types was chosen as the sample to evaluate the performance of Solid-Liquid Extraction unit. Dynamic profile (vitamin E concentration vs. time) with 40°C, 50°C and 60°C were investigated from 0 min until 105 min. The vitamin E concentration was analysis in total volume of solvent. The temperature at 40°C found to have better extraction of vitamin E. 40°C of temperature were further investigated using batch solid-liquid extraction method. A huge amount of vitamin E separation was confirmed with the amount of 474 ppm in oil concentration. Therefore, solid liquid extraction was suitable method to extract oil and vitamin E and advance study of effect of degradation, oxidation and mass transfer on separation of vitamin E need to be considered.
