Abstract

It has been common problem for any oil palm worker to do pruning for tall oil palm tree (more than 5m). The removal of oil palm frond (also called pruning) is compulsory so that harvesting can be done efficiently. Despite of the advanced existing pruning tools/machine, it is not suitable to use for tall oil palm tree and still need man power to operate. Oil palm worker often suffer from ergonomic injuries such as shoulder and neck pain resulting from repetitive pruning operation. Besides that, our oil palm industry also faced problems of labour shortage. This is due to unfavourable working environment, which required a lot of energy and people prefer working under air-conditioned working place. The main objective of this study is to develop a conceptual design of oil palm frond cutter to be integrated with climber robot. This study is focusing in the development of the conceptual design of the oil palm frond cutter and does not involve the design of climber robot. The method use to collect the oil palm data (height and width of oil palm frond) is by using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). Frond analysis by using LiDAR data was taken from the average age of 7 years old oil palm tree. LiDAR data of oil palm are taken from five oil palm fronds in each six oil palm trees in order to determine average size of oil palm frond. This study required computer aided drawing software for 3D drawing in order to develop a conceptual design of oil palm frond cutter. Autodesk Inventor 2017 was selected to draw the oil palm frond cutter with an actual dimensions and parameters. To be conclude, this study will possibly help determine which cutting mechanism is suitable for oil palm frond cutter to be integrated with climber robot. In addition, this study also help in development of conceptual design cutter that is ready to fabricate in future.
