Abstract
Rice is the most important crop in Malaysia because the whole population consumes rice as their staple food. As the population grows, the pressure to plant more rice has increased. Therefore, in order to increase the productivity through improving the efficiency of paddy production, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology can to be utilized as the prime mover for selected field operations and monitoring crop growth and health in paddy production. The paddy cultivation in the country is done by small scale farmers and most of the involved field operations are not fully mechanised. For chemical spraying and fertiliser spreading operations, knapsack or mist or dust blower are normally used by the service providers who directly provide these operational services to the paddy farmers. The current method of chemical spraying and fertiliser spreading operations are very labour intensive, time consuming and give poor work qualities. Therefore, the use of UAV technology could not only make the operation faster and easier to do but it also makes the operation to be done in a very precise order. However, before it could be fully implemented in the paddy fields, a proper standard operational procedure on chemical spraying and fertiliser spreading using UAV under a typical paddy field layout need to be first established. Thus, this study was initiated to conceptualise and design an indoor test rig for testing UAV for aerial agricultural chemical spraying operations. Concurrently, a proper test standard procedure was formulated based of the proposed test rig for conducting a proper and unbiased testing and evaluation on the spray distributions and drift spreading of UAV in aerial spraying with high precisions.
