Abstract

The composites of polylactic acid (PLA)/ jackfruit skin powder (JSP) were mixed by using polydrive mixer with JSP contents of 5%, 10%, 30% and 40%. Optimum powder loading was chosen based on the mechanical strength results and in this study, 30% JSP composite containing different thymol contents of 5%, 10% and 15% were prepared and tested. The analyses that have been carried out were mechanical properties of composites by using Instron machine and also thermal profile by using Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA). The thermal analysis was conducted to determine the degradation temperature of the PLA/JSP and PLA/JSP/thymol composite. It was found that, the addition of JSP has improved the tensile modulus of the composite while, the tensile strength and elongation at break, were decreased with increasing of JSP at different contents. As expected, the addition of thymol has improved the elongation at break of the composites while, decreased the tensile strength and tensile modulus of the composites. The reduction of tensile modulus of the PLA/JSP/thymol composites enhances the ductility as well as elongation performance for the composites. Then, from TGA experiment, it was found that the addition of JSP has decreased the thermal stability of composites along with the increasing of JSP contents. Furthermore, the addition of thymol has increased the thermal stability of the composites than the control of PLA/JSP composite of fixed content of 30%
