Abstract
Red chili is a famous ingredient used in kitchen in most subtropical and tropical countries. Red chili is commonly consumed fresh, dried or in powder form. Red chili is dried traditionally under the sun with a large, open space and long drying times. Drying of red chilies has been used as preservation method to extend the shell life of red chilies. The average diameter of red chili seeds is approximately in range of 1.3 mm until 1.5 mm for thousands of seeds, it weight approximately 60 g and average weight for a single seed is 0.06 g. The separation of seeds from dried red chilies is done through manual method which is by using scissors and sieve. This method is time consuming and even cause uncomfortable to the person. The main objective of this project was to design and develop a Dried Red Chillies Seeds Separating Machine that will help consumers to obtain seedless dried red chilies. To analyse the performance and efficiency of this machine, two parameters were evaluated which were production rate and efficiency. The production rate of manual method was 0.84 kg/hr with efficiency of 99.35 %. The machine was tested with three different working speeds of rotary separator which is 45, 55 and 65 RPM. The production rate obtained for the first, second and third speed were 1.51 kg/hr, 1/64 kg/hr and 1.77 kg/hr respectively while, the efficiency obtained were 76.17 %, 79.86 % and 75.94 % respectively. Based on the comparison of results between the manual method and machine application, it was proven that the dried red chilies seed separator was capable to separate seeds much better within short period of time as compared to the manual method.
