Abstract

Introduction: The occurrence of microplastics from land based sources is mainly contributed by household washing machines however microplastics pollution in grey water is limitedly being investigated. In Malaysia, microplastics studies have reported involving sea water and river water despite the absence of studies relating to microplastics pollution involving grey water from household washing machine. Objective: This study aims to assess washing machine usage and knowledge of microplastics pollution at household level and identify occurrence of microplastics pollution (size and morphology) along with association between washing machine usage and occurrence of microplastic pollution in grey water produced by washing machine. Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted involving 102 households from Klang Valley (Malaysia). Microplastics in grey water samples have been extracted via vacuum filtration process. Microplastics in grey water samples were identified in terms of size and morphology via microscopy technique. Results: The result have showed that respondents knowledge on washing machine usage and as a source microplastics pollution in grey water was poor. The mean of microplastics size (length) was 0.03380μm, maximum size of microplastics found in grey water samples was 8096.2462μm and 73.8939μm was the minimum value. Morphology microplastics in grey water sample has indicated that the highest percentage was fibers (71%), followed by fibers and fragments (20%), mixture of fibers, fragments and pellet (9%). Conclusion: Greywater from washing machine is seen as one of the potential microplastics pollution to wastewater treatment plant and which needs further investigation. Keywords: microplastics, grey water, household washing machine, morphology, fibers
