Abstract
Introduction: Depression is a worrying issue these days especially in Asian countries and it is a leading cause of global years lived with disability. It can be considered as a silent killer without warning to the patients as well as to people around them. World Federation for Mental Health stated that 1 in 5 people at workplace had mental health condition. Objective: Therefore, this study aimed to determine the association between sedentary behaviour and psychosocial factors at work with depression among office workers in Putrajaya. Methodology: This is a cross sectional study which used pedometer and Occupational Sitting and Physical Activity Questionnaire (OSPAQ) to assess sedentary behaviour and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to assess depression and Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) to assess psychosocial factor at work. This study was conducted at Ministry of Human Resources in Putrajaya, with a total of 100 respondents were selected. Results: This study found a 68% of total respondents were sedentary, the prevalence of depression was 33% and 46% of respondents had job strain. In addition, it was found that there was significant different between gender and depression (p=0.007). Conclusion: In conclusion, there is no significant association between sedentary behaviour and psychosocial factor at work with depression (p>0.05). Further research is needed to establish a depression risk factors in Malaysia as well as discovering preventive measures in order to produce healthy workers with healthy mind to lessen the prevalence of mental health condition.
