Abstract
Introduction: Tropical fruits are a Malaysian staple, contributing to higher waste of the inedible parts of the fruits, namely the peels and the seeds. These fruit wastes are naturally rich in protein, lignin, hemicelluloses and pectin. The available protein in fruit wastes can act as a coagulant to remove turbidity at low cost and as an alternative to potassium alum, which by-products have been linked to serious health issues due to long term exposure. Objective: This study aims to determine the best tropical fruit and the most optimum parameters to be used as a natural coagulant for turbidity removal. Local tropical fruit waste namely banana peel, durian rind, jackfruit rind and date, mata kucing, jack fruit and durian seeds have been used in this study. Methodology: Protein extracted from these tropical fruit wastes were functionalized with iron nano-particles to act as a natural coagulant. A jar test was then performed to test the effectiveness of these natural coagulants in turbidity removal. Results: This study has found that banana peel has a higher turbidity removal efficiency (87%) compared to other tropical fruits waste. A Box-Behnken Design has showed protein extracted from 0.5% of mass, 7.5mg of nanoparticle mass and 90 minutes settling time were the most optimum parameters in turbidity removal. In field samples, the combination of these optimum parameters have achieved a total of 73% turbidity removal. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that banana peel is a potential natural coagulant that can be investigated further. Keywords: tropical fruit waste, natural coagulants; turbidity; removal
