Abstract

Background: There are various basic enrollment intake types accepted by the Medical School in Malaysia including the Sijil Pelajaran Tinggi Malaysia (STPM), Matriculation and Asasi Sains Pertanian (ASPER) Programme. We hypothesize that there is a variation in the academic performance of preclinical medical students in UPM associated with socio-demographic factors such as gender and ethnicity, and different types of basic enrolment intake. This study aims to determine the relationship between academic performance variation of preclinical medical students in UPM with sociodemographic factors (gender, ethnicity) and different types of basic enrolment intake such as ASPER, STPM or matriculation. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using secondary data from the Deputy Dean's Office (Academic of Medicine) Faculty of Health and Health Sciences (FMHS). The information obtained includes the gender, ethnicity, basic enrolment intake and examination results of Package 1 to 9 and the Professional Exam I of 3 cohorts of students (total n=308) that were kept anonymous with an unknown year of enrolment. The obtained data were analysed using IBM Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) v26.0. Results: There were significant associations between STPM intake and good academic performance in Package 1 (p=0.007), 2 (p<0.001), 5 (p=0.007), 6 (0.012), 7 (0.006), 8 (p=0.002) for Cohort 1,and Package 1 (p=0.049), 6 (p=0.031) and 9 (p=0.049) in Cohort 2.There was no significant association between basic enrolment of students and the academic performances of the medical students for Cohort 3. Academic performance was also significantly associated with factors such as Chinese and Malay ethnicity. There was no significant association between the gender of students and the academic performances of the medical students of UPM. Conclusion: Research data demonstrated that with regards to basic enrolment intake, STPM graduates outperformed students from other basic enrolment intakes in terms of academic achievement for Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 in Medical School of UPM.
