Abstract
Breastfeeding is a natural way of providing an infant with nutrients that essential for optimal growth, health, and cognitive development. Children who are exclusively breastfed are 14 times more likely to survive the first 6 months of life than non-breastfed children. However, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months in Malaysia is still below the Global Nutrition Aim 2025 (to achieve 50% of the population) even though there was an increase from 23.3% in year 2011 to 47.1% in year 2016. Psychological, social demographic factor, social support, traditional practices, maternal and infant factors, breastfeeding practice and problems could be a part of the factors that could influence mother’s decision to breastfeed exclusively up to 6 months. This present study were to determine the association of breastfeeding challenged, psychological state, social support and mother-infant factors with breastfeeding self-efficacy among mother-infant dyads in Wilayah Persekutuan Hospital. A set of self-administered questionnaire was used in determining factors associated with mother’s self-efficacy to breastfeed among 219 mothers with infants below age of 6 months in Women and Children Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Putrajaya. There were a total of 10 sections that asses obstetric characteristics, breastfeeding practice, breastfeeding self-efficacy, home confinement care, social support, postpartum stress, postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, sociodemographic factors and infant factors. The findings suggest that a strong significant association was established between maternal psychological state, breastfeeding practice, social support and mother-infant factors were established.
