Abstract

Introduction: This review summarizes the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM10 and their potential carcinogenic risk reported in Southeast Asia (SEA) countries which are Malaysia, Viet Nam, Singapore and Thailand from the year 2011 to year 2021. Some PAHs are highly carcinogenic or mutagenic towards human. Objectives: This study aimed to review the literatures obtained from Scopus database from year 2011 to 2021 and assess the carcinogenic health risk of inhalation of PAHs reported in SEA region. Methodology: Literatures are searched using the Scopus search engine using the main keyword and filtered the results to only researches conducted in SEA countries. The reported concentrations of PAHs from these literatures were used to calculate health risk assessment. Results and Discussion: The highest concentrations of PAHs in PM10 were ranging from 25.24 to 62.81 ng/m3 in the mid-month of an important public holiday period in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The lowest reported concentration was recorded in wet season of 2010, also in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which was 0.25 ng/m3. The ILCR value of all the reviewed papers did not exceed the safe limit for PAHs exposure, ranging from 2.73×10-4 to 5.8×10-13 except one paper from Thailand (2.61 ×10-4 to 3.22 ×10-2). Conclusion: This study suggests the importance of more studies on PAHs in SEA and efforts on reducing air pollution, since PAHs is always one of the harmful pollutants and the air pollution is increasing day by day due to anthropogenic activities. Keywords: Particulate matter, PAHs in PM10, Southeast Asia, health risk assessment, transboundary haze, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
