Abstract

Introduction: Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are the prime concerns among global population. These three elements are complementing each other to provide environmental health benefits. Adequacy of safe water is important as a requirement for proper sanitation and good hygiene practices. Objective: The aim of this thesis is to identify level of knowledge, attitude, and awareness (KAA) regarding WASH. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 165 residents aged 18 years old and above. All respondents were sampled through cluster sampling. A set of validated questionnaires modified from previous studies consisting of four sections used to access the level of KAA on WASH. Then, the data analysis was performed by using SPSS Version 22. Results: The result of this study showed that majority of respondents had moderate knowledge (40.0%), moderate attitude (76.0%), and moderate awareness (59.0%). Chi-square analysis was conducted and the result showed that there was an association between household income (X2= 20.765, p=0.004) and gender (X2=7.263, p=0.027) with level of knowledge. However, there was no association between age and level of knowledge (X2=8.599, p=0.335). Besides, there was a significant association between knowledge and attitude and the result showed a poor correlation between them (p=0.006, r=0.211). For knowledge and awareness, there was also a significant association shown and it showed a poor correlation (p=0.009, r=0.203). Conclusion: This study inferred that as knowledge level improves, so does attitude and awareness. Continuous education through health promotion programs among rural dwellers is needed to make sure information regarding WASH is distributed fairly among all. Key words: Knowledge, attitude, awareness, water, sanitation, hygiene, rural.
