Abstract

Menu labelling, which is the calorie information on menus, is a preventive method taken to reduce obesity prevalence. Implementing menu labelling could be beneficial in reducing the rates of obesity among the students (young adults). This study aims to assess the intention to use menu labelling in on-campus food service operations among private university students in Klang valley. The extended theory of planned behaviour was used to investigate the relationship between attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, nutritional knowledge, and the intention to use menu labelling. Nonprobability convenience sampling was done using an online questionnaire to collect data from private universities in Klang valley. A total of 199 respondents from 27 universities responded to the survey. The results showed that there was statistically significant association between attitude (r=0.524, p<0.001), subjective norms (r=0.524, p<0.001), perceived behavioural control (r=0.470, p<0.001) and nutritional knowledge (r=0.285, p<0.001) and the intention to use menu labelling. The results also showed that there was no significant difference of intention to use menu labelling between males (M = 4.73, SD = 1.65) and females (M = 4.85, SD = 1.48; t = - 0.464, p = 0.643), BMI groups (F3,194 = 1.891, p = 0.132) and monthly household income groups (F3,194 = 1.534, p = 0.218). Overall, the study found that there is positive association between attitude, subjective norms, perceived behaviour control and nutritional knowledge with the intention to use menu labelling in on-campus food service operations among private university students in Klang Valley. The findings of this study could help policymakers understand students’ intention to use menu labelling before implementing a mandatory menu labelling policy in the year 2025.
