Abstract
The prevalence of obesity and overweight among Malaysian university is increasing, which was proven to be associated with the habit of eating out. One way to help consumer choose healthier options is by providing menu labelling which is a list of calories and/or other nutritional information. The Malaysian government plans to enact a nationwide menu labelling law in 2025. Thus, this study was aimed to investigate the influence of menu labelling on the calories ordered among Malaysian public university students in Klang Valley and its associated factors. An online self-reported questionnaire via Google Form was used to collect the data. Study variables include socio demographic factors, BMI, health consciousness, attitude towards menu labelling, and calories ordered. Simple random sampling method was used where the participants answered either one of questionnaire with the calorie labelled menu or the non-calorie labelled menu. Participants were required to choose a lunch meal based on the menu provided. The calorie chosen was subtracted with their individual calorie needs to get the total calories ordered (calories difference). Total participants were 200 in which majority of them were Malay, female, normal weight, belonged to the M40 household income group, had good health consciousness (5.11 ± 1.16), and positive attitude towards menu labelling (5.83 ± 1.01). To conclude, there were no significant association for calories ordered between those exposed to a calorie labelled menu and those exposed to a non-calorie labelled menu. However, there was a significant association for BMI with calories ordered (p<0.001). Even though more than half of them ate out every day in a week, majority reported never or rarely in using menu labelling. More research is required to assess effectiveness of menu labelling in curbing obesity, the readiness, and knowledge of the consumer to use menu labelling prior to the nationwide law.
