Abstract

Food choices while eating out are often high in energy which may increase the risk of obesity. One of the effective policies used to reduce the prevalence of obesity while eating out is menu labelling. Menu labelling in this study is defined as the provision of calorie information on the menu. Given that most university students consume meals in on-campus foodservice operations, the use of menu labelling may help students to be informed about their food choices. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to examine the factors influencing the intention to use menu labelling in oncampus foodservice operations among public university students in Klang Valley. The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) with an additional construct of nutritional knowledge was used as a theoretical framework in this study. A total of 140 respondents participated in this study through an online questionnaire distributed on email and social media. Findings revealed no significant differences in means of intention between males (5.02 ± 1.59) and females (5.46 ± 1.34); t(139) = -1.596, p = 0.113, BMI categories (F(3, 136) = [1.928], p = 0.128), and monthly household income groups (F(2, 137) = [0.763], p = 0.469). Significant associations were found between attitude (r = 0.795, p < 0.01), perceived behavioural control (r = 0.821, p < 0.01), subjective norm (r = 0.517, p < 0.01), and nutritional knowledge (r = 0.183, p < 0.05) with the intention to use menu labelling. All in all, significant positive associations were found between attitude, perceived behavioural control, subjective norm, and nutritional knowledge with the intention. Policymakers may use those results to develop proper strategies to boost students' intentions to use menu labelling
