Abstract
Foodborne illness is one of the main public health problems worldwide as it is associated with decreased quality of life and significant morbidity. They have become significant public health concerns among developed and developing countries worldwide. University students may have poor food safety knowledge and improper food handling practices when they are at college. Majority of the participants had a normal BMI (56.3%), followed by overweight (17.0%), underweight (16.1%) and obese (10.7%) respectively. Most of the participants have a fair food safety knowledge (90.2%), positive attitudes (58.0%) and good food safety practices (88.4%). The result of the study showed that food safety attitudes was significantly associated with food safety practices (X2 = 5.846, p = 0.016). However, there are no significant associations were found between sociodemographic characteristics, nutritional status and food safety knowledge. To conclude, this finding indicates that a good food safety practice can be achieved by having a positive attitude towards food safety.
