Abstract

Malaysia had the highest obesity rates among adults in Southeast Asia. Calorie menu labeling is among the methods that is used to curb the obesity problem. However, the effectiveness of menu labeling is still inconclusive and very limited studies were conducted in Malaysia. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the influence of menu labeling on the total calories ordered among Malaysian private university students and its associated factors. Data was obtained online through a selfreported questionnaire using the Google Form platform from a total of 200 participants. The participants were selected through the snowballing sampling method from a total of 10 private universities in Klang Valley. Among the variables recorded include participants’ sociodemographic and respondent variables, BMI, physical activity level, health consciousness, attitude towards menu labeling, and the total calories ordered, which were compared to the participants’ individual caloric needs.A total of 200 Malaysian private university students participated. Most of them were of Chinese ethnicity (65%), and had a normal weight BMI (61.5%). Their household income level generally consisted of private university students from the B40 (41.5%) and M40 (40.5%) backgrounds. There was no significant difference in the total calories ordered between those that were exposed to a calorie labeled menu and those that were not. Meanwhile, health consciousness (r = 0.332, p<0.001) and ethnicity (p=0.001) were found to be significantly associated with the total calories ordered.Even though there was not a statistically significant difference in the total calories ordered between those that were exposed to a calorie labeled menu and those that were not, the calories ordered by the participants exposed to a calorie labeled menu was found to be less. Therefore, this current study’s findings highlighted the importance of the need to have further studies that investigate the influence of menu labeling implementation in Malaysia so that the effectiveness of menu labeling can be fully understood
