Abstract

Mussels (Meretrix meretrix) and sediment samples collected in Tanjung Kidurong beach of Bintulu from September to November 2007 were analyzed for Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The highest heavy metal concentration in Meretrix meretrix was Zn with mean value of 52.29 µgig, followed by Cu, Pb and Cd with mean concentration values of 5.54 µgig, 5.43 µgig and 1.59 µgig respectively. Zinc showed the highest concentration with a mean value with 51.30 µgig in smaller Meretrix meretrix (20-40 mm) followed by (Pb) 6.40 µg/g, (Cu) 4.83 µgig and (Cd) 1.66 µgig. Meretrix meretrix sizes ranged between 41 - 80 mm showed heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd) concentration with mean value of 53.29 µgig, 6.25 µgig, 4.47 µgig and 1.51 µgig respectively. The highest concentration of heavy metal in the sediment recorded was Zn with mean value of 33.04 µgig followed by (Pb) 20.12 µgig,(Cu) 3.87 µgig and (Cd) 3.47 µgig. Since all the concentrations of the heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb dan Cd) in the flesh of Meretrix meretrix collected from the Tanjung Kidurong were still within the permissible limits set by most countries, this indicated that the consumption of mussels from Tanjung Kidurong is unlikely to cause health problems in the short-term or if they are consumed in small amount.
