Abstract

A survey on diversity and availability of marketable wild fruits at selected native markets in Bintulu, Sibu, Sarikei, Miri and Mukah has been conducted from August until December 2008. Wild fruits are one of the non timber products that are sold by local people in local markets and fruit stalls. The purpose of this study is to detennine the diversity, availability, known uses and economic potential of marketable wild fruits. Wild fruits availability from local the price, uses and method of consw11ption was recorded during the sampling. Twenty three species have been identified from the selected native markets comprises of 14 Families; Anarcardiaceae, Bombaceae, Burseraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Gnelaceae, Lauraceae, Legwninosae, Moraceae, Musaceae, Palmae, Sapindacea, Solanaceae, Sonneratiaceae, and Zingiberaceae belonging to 11 Orders. The highest species recorded in Bintulu 12 species, followed by Sibu and Sarikei 11 species respectively, Miri 5 species and lowest Mukah 2 species. The most common species observed in all the native markets are Parkia speciosa, Musa acuminata, Mangifera pajang, So/annum macrocarpon and Salaca conferta. Sonneratia caseolaris is a rare species was observed in Sibu. Based on the Jaccard's coefficient, Selangau and Nyelong 2 have almost similar species composition compared to other native markets (0.94). Whilst the lowest similarity of species composition are between Bintulu and Mukah (0.11 ). There is some unique utilization of fruits components by the local people such as the skin (exocarp) of embang (Mangifera pajang) are consumed as salad. However wild fruits are not so popular, occasionally only local people who dwell near the forest have used them as a food. The unique flavour of the fruits is one of the marketing characteristics that can be used to exploit them.
